Special Info  Joy Philomena Harvey was born in the parish of Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies to the late Theresa James and Orville Harvey on November 21,1948. She was the first of 7 children. Joy attended primary and secondary schools in Jamaica. At a very young age she became a mother to 3 beautiful children, Sandra, Patrick, and Carlton. Her love and drive to create a better life for her children led her to immigrate to the United States and became a citizen on November 3rd, 1981. Her love of arithmetic naturally prepared her to work as a licensed bookkeeper for an electrical company affiliated with The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Local 3). Although Joy thrived at her job as a bookkeeper handling multi-million dollar accounts she always had a personal yearning to help those in need. Her drive to succeed led her to return to school in 1994 to pursue a childhood dream to complete a degree as a registered nurse. She graduated in 1999, as a licensed registered nursing supervisor. She worked tirelessly covering 12-14 hour shifts doing what she loved, helping those in need. During the time of completing her studies she was married to Donald Charlton. Their union flourished with the births of their 3 children Felicia, Yasmin, and Robert. Her children and her family meant the world to her and she couldn’t spend another moment being in a new country without them. This caused Joy to bring her late mother Theresa, and 6 siblings to America. Living in a modest 3-bedroom house in Far Rockaway, Queens no one could stop her from welcoming her family to live with her. The house nicknamed the “The Little House that Could” allowed her extended family to live with her. This brought her such warmth and comfort. Her selfless act of love is just one of the many beautiful and loving characteristics people loved about her. Anyone who knew her understood that her passion for fashion was real, she loved to shop. Joy received a number of educational degrees from known institutions such an Associate’s Degree from Nassau Boces in Long island, N.Y. and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from New York State University. She worked hard because her motto was, “Education is one thing No One can ever take away from you, so get it and get it NOW!” One of her many hobbies were golfing at Myrtle Beach, taking long road trips to Canada, and cooking. She could make a delicious pot of rice and peas that would make you ask for more and more. She enjoyed singing her favorite gospel hymn, God’s Grace and loved spending time with her loved ones. As we sit and remember the wonderful moments with our dearly beloved Joy please remember the words, when a storm hits and knocks the wind out of us, there’s nothing wrong with weeping. The Scripture says God collects all of our tears. He sees the hurts, the disappointments, and the heartache. Psalm 84; He’ll take those tears and turn them into pools to refresh you.” Joy touched so many lives, and will be sorely missed. She leaves to morn her passing her children Sandra, Patrick, Carlton, Felicia, Yasmin, and Robert, siblings Charmaine, Carol, Dean, Wayne, Judith, and Michael, 26 grandchildren, 15 + great grandchildren, a host of nephews, nieces, in-laws and close friends. May God’s angel continue to shine bright among us all.
